Jonah 3:4-5: “Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.”
Today we have a reluctant hero—Jonah. Have you ever thought, “I could never share Jesus with that person”. Maybe they intimidate you or you really don’t care for their personality. Next thing you know, the door opens to share and all you want to do is run. Today’s Go Guide will help us trust and not take off.
The whole book of the prophet Jonah is a clear witness that God loves people and wants to save them from their sin. God also chooses to use people to communicate the message of His love to others. In the case of Jonah, God used an imperfect person to share that message! This is boldly demonstrated throughout the book.
Jonah didn’t want to participate in God’s mission. He made his distaste for Nineveh and everyone in it . There was some “fishy” business involved in his disobedience. Finally, Jonah begrudgingly obeyed God; the sinful people heard the message and repented. An entire city that was doomed for destruction was spared because of God’s mercy and Jonah’s obedience.
This story gives us hope today. We are often reluctant to share about Jesus for a variety of reasons, but God is faithful in using our faltering, stumbling efforts and words. Why? Because he loves to save people! In fact, Jesus said this was why he came to seek and save the lost and call sinners to repentance (Luke 19:10). Let’s speak about Jesus and his Kingdom, even when we don’t feel like it and watch God do what he wants to do–save people!
